Aventura Dance recently partnered with HELP, Inc. to raise money for HIV Education & Law. AIDS represents one of the most pressing issues facing our community. Miami faces the second highest rate of AIDS cases in the country. The demographics of Miami cannot be ignored when addressing the impact, emerging needs and changing epidemic of the AIDS virus. There is a severe and disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on Miami's-Dade's African American and Caribbean Blacks, who make up only 19% of the population but 49% of the cumulative AIDS cases. Hispanics, who are about 49% of the population, make up 33% of the AIDS cases, and non-Hispanic whites comprise 18% of the cumulative AIDS cases. Current trends in the newly reported HIV cases, between July 1997, when reporting began, and December 1998, indicated that 58% of the cases were among Blacks, 28% among Hispanics and 14% among whites. HELP has sought to focus its services on Miami's minority and immigrant communities, which currently face the highest rate (almost 40%) of new infection and are among the least likely to have access to the financial resources necessary for successful litigation. www.helpinclaw.com
